May 26, 2023A trend towards smartphones shifting towards titanium chassis has started to pick up momentum, and unsurprisingly, it had to be a Chinese firm that switches to new build materials, according to one tipster. Apparently, the Xiaomi 14 Pro will be the world’s first Android handset to transition to a new chassis, and its launch is said to happen just a few months after the arrival of the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
Apart from the Xiaomi 14 Pro, Ice Universe has shared a list of flagships that the company intends to launch in the future. The entire lineup is said to include the regular 14, 14 Pro Plus, and the 14 Ultra, so four models in total. So far, only the 14 Pro is said to ship with a titanium body because our gut tells us that Xiaomi may move away from aluminum for the 14 Pro Plus and the 14 Ultra, as judging by the name alone, both of these flagships will likely ship with slightly better specifications.
Of course, in true Ice Universe fashion, he left out multiple details, leaving us with more questions than answers, such as how much the Xiaomi 14 Pro will cost if it does feature a titanium build. Keep in mind that both the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are rumored to feature Grade 5 titanium, giving it superior properties over both stainless steel and aluminum. Unfortunately, this material is more expensive than the two, so manufacturers have refrained from using it for now.
However, with the Apple Watch Ultra sporting titanium, it is only a matter of time before this material gets widely adopted into smartphones and tablets. Samsung is also rumored to be bringing titanium exclusively to the Galaxy S24 Ultra, meaning that if no other Android smartphone features it, the flagship might only be second to the Xiaomi 14 Pro to forego an aluminum chassis.
Going by last year’s launches, the Chinese firm is expected to use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in this model, and with the SoC’s unveiling happening in October, we will find out if other devices besides the 14 Pro will have a titanium chassis.
